SUMMARY:Goobers Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST INTERVIEW: MAR 14\nRECEPTION: APR 18\nworks by Kevin Morrissey\, Andrew Frye & Kyle Morrissey\nEXHIBIT OVERVIEW\n“Goobers” is a trio show inspired by the signs and vendors of the backroad culture of the Carolinas—it’s allure\, charm\, and quirkiness. Through its playful weathered textures\, “Goobers” invites the viewer to approach “the southern thing” with reflection and sensitivity. \nEXHIBIT STATEMENT\nA body of work documenting Boiled P-Nut Signs and vendors. Kyle Morrissey\, the photographer captured photographs of the various roadside stands and signs. Andrew Frye and Kevin Morrissey then used the sign text\, imagery and textures to create collaborative pieces focusing on their shared affection for alternative painting processes and love of texture. Andrew and Kevin’s works blend their alternative painting methods of Andrew’s poured paint and Kevin’s spray paint stencils. The duo passed the works back and forth in the studio layering Morrissey’s spray paint stencils and sanding methods over Frye’s poured paint methods and vice versa until the final image became a unified piece with dynamic layers of textures pushing and pulling between background\, midground\, and foreground. \nBoth photographs and paintings express themes in the spirit of the uniqueness of life in the south. We chose boiled peanuts as our imagery to unify the vision & playfully symbolize the complexities of “the southern thing”; it’s allure\, it’s charm\, it’s quirkiness\, and through the textures….there is weathered history that needs to sensitively be observed and reflected upon. \nKEVIN MORRISSEY\nARTIST BIO Kevin Morrissey was born\, lives and works in Summerville \, SC. Earned a BFA in Arts Education from Winthrop University in 2003 and has spent the last 20 years teaching art\, making art\, and championing community art projects. \nANDREW FRYE\nARTIST BIO Raised in the rubber city and receiving his BFA in painting/ drawing from the University of Akron\, OH in 2005\, Andrew Frye relocated to San Francisco\, CA to gain gallery experience. He worked primarily as a gallery preparator and curator assistant to a handful of galleries in the Bay Area. Returning to the southeast years later\, Frye spent a brief stint in education while continuing his art making practice. After years of receiving steady art commissions and a new need to be home\, Frye walked away from education in 2020 to make art and raise children full time. \nKYLE MORRISSEY\nARTIST BIO Kyle Morrissey is a photographer and painter that lives and works in Charleston\, SC. He graduated from Winthrop University in 2011\nwith a BFA in General Studio concentrating in Photography and Painting. He finds shared sensibilities between the mediums that often inform his work.
