DESCRIPTION:works by Nicole Driscoll & Jinna Kim\nEXHIBIT OVERVIEW\nThe reflective photos of Nicole Driscoll’s series\, “You can’t eat your feelings” and Jinna Kim’s expansive photos in her “Korean Pavilion at World Expo” series summon us to engage internally and with the world around us\, inviting the viewer toward intimate\, communal\, yet personal paths. This is Inside Outside. \nEXHIBIT STATEMENTS\nNICOLE DRISCOLL\nI’m a binge eater. \nIt started in the dark basement pantry of my youth\, where I consumed snack after snack in secret. I found intricate hiding spots for discarded wrappers\, hoping no one would see. Continuing into adulthood\, I use food as an outlet for my stress and anxiety. \nWhen 2020 hit\, the isolation\, tensity and uncertainty made me binge even more. I found comfort in food as the world around me changed. With time for self reflection\, I was able to see the bad relationship I had with food and how I used it to cope. \n“You can’t eat your feelings” is a series of polaroid photographs of my recent binges. Using polaroids was a way to instantly document them as they happened. Each photo has a note of reflection. Why did I binge at that moment? What was I feeling? What was I avoiding? \nARTIST BIO Nicole Driscoll is a filmmaker and photographer based in Charlotte\, North Carolina. Her projects have been included in galleries and festivals such as The Light Factory\, The Curated Fridge\, Goodyear Arts\, and the Click Photo Festival. In 2014\, she developed Films on Tap\, a film festival that pairs local short films and locally brewed beer. Through ArtPop Street Gallery\, Driscoll’s photograph\, “Hands in the Sky\,” has been selected for prominent display on media spaces and billboards throughout the Charlotte area for the entire duration of 2023\, including a billboard in New York City. She currently works as a teaching artist at Studio 345\, an after-school program for at-risk youth\, and as a freelancer in the greater Charlotte community. \nJINNA KIM\nMultidisciplinary artist Jinna Kim’s world expo photo series was taken in March 2022 during the closing month of Expo Dubai which was deferred for over a year due to the pandemic. She traveled there with an Arts & Science Council grant to experience world class art first hand. Her photographs printed on wood as archival pigment prints is her means of sharing the world expo in the Carolinas as well as a peek into her immigrant heritage. “Korea Pavilion at World Expo” captures the country pavilion’s exterior facade which changes color throughout the day because the architecture is dynamic with the cubes actually moving. Jinna was born in South Korea so this particular pavilion is from her motherland. \nARTIST BIO Initially trained in classical music\, Jinna Kim is a Korean American multidisciplinary artist\, filmmaker\, photographer\, violist and more based in Charlotte\, NC. In addition to being a SAG-AFTRA eligible actress\, Jinna continues to shoot short films and photographs\, make music\, and create public installations and interdisciplinary projects that highlight diverse perspectives while sneaking in educational and unique cultural content in delightful ways. Her first short film about suffragist Mabel Lee titled “Chinese Girl Wants Vote” is now part of the Digital Public Library of America. Jinna recently won grants and scholarships from the Arts & Science Council and Kunstlerstadt Kalbe in Germany. She previously worked at The Public Theater and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Manhattan.
