exhibition statement
JOANNA CARTER
Self-portraiture dealing with themes of vulnerability & intimacy in examining, for the artist and the viewer.
The images in the mixed media portraits are materialized temporal self-portraits on a bathroom mirror highlighting the vulnerability and intimacy that is present when one peers at their reflection.
The second part of my installation examines the relationship between the self-portrait and the viewer. The same intuitive, quick lines found in the smaller pieces work to centralize the artist as subject matter while the clear glass material of the surface encases the viewer's reflection, creating a constant shift in engagement between self, artist and the work.
JOANNA CARTER
Joanna Carter was born in Miami, Florida. In 2009, she received her Bachelor's in Fine Arts in Drawing from the University of Central Florida and her Master's in Fine Arts from Florida International University. Her work has been exhibited in shows across the east coast including the cities of Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Atlanta, and New York City. She is also the recipient of the Women in the Visual Arts/ Lynn Travis Stender Scholarship. In her works on paper, mixed media, video and installation, she is interested in giving the viewer a revelation of the intimate artist's hand through the process of mark making and documentation.
