Contemplative works reflective of familiar surroundings. Recurring visual elements of emotion, rhythm and thought bring the viewer’s perspectives into the painting’s secrets which find their life in the stories from trees.
These paintings are contemplative. They reflect the culmination of experiences, and the result of paying close attention to the visual surroundings throughout my familiar landscape. Each painting reflects recurring visual elements, emotions, rhythm and thoughts. The final results are methodically evolved compositions that often keep their secrets silent. They allow the viewer the opportunity to experience them through their own personal perspective and witness what can be learned from the stories from trees.
Born in Texas, Matheny has spent the majority of his life in South Carolina where his roots run deep. He grew up in Anderson, S.C. and attended the Greenville Fine Arts Center and Anderson University prior to being graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. One of his earliest art lessons was with Clifton Jordan, a local sign painter in the reclaimed automotive painting booth of his grandfather’s Gulf Station in Belton, S.C. These experiences have all collided to provide Matheny the unique perspective to create the artwork that he does today.
Matheny works as a curator, arts administrator and a visual artist, and has exhibited his artwork in the Carolinas and Georgia since the early 1990’s.
