There was an article circulating the Internet a few weeks ago about a project called Through Your Eyes. The leaders of Miracle Hill Rescue Mission, based in Spartanburg, SC, saw what Café Art did in London and wanted to give it a try here in the States.

They handed out 100 disposable cameras to homeless men and women around the city in order to create this Through Your Eyes project. The project has three purposes: to provide hope for those who are hurting, to provide joy in creating art and to provide awareness and support for the homeless

Because Spartanburg is so close to us, we decided to take a trip down I-85 to see the exhibit, which will only be up until the end of the month at the Chambers Cultural Center.

One hallway is filled on both sides with all of the images from the cameras: the good, the bad and the imperfect.

In the next room, they have selected 20 of the best images, printed them and framed them. You can vote for which image you think is the best by putting your spare change in a box that has been installed underneath each image.

It is great to see people using art to bring attention to a part of humanity that often gets ignored and it’s especially exciting to see it happening in our home state.
